Uganda Reinsurance Company Limited joined insurance practitioners and industry stakeholders from across the region for the 6th Insurance Training College (ITC) International Insurance Conference, held in Gulu under the theme “From Risk to Readiness: Navigating the Evolving Insurance Trends.”

The three-day conference opened with a vibrant welcome cocktail, setting the stage for meaningful networking, knowledge exchange, and conversations on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of insurance. Uganda Re was represented by a team led by Chief Executive Officer Ronald Musoke, alongside Technical Officers Derrick Nsimbi and Sandra Akumu, and Finance Officers Godfrey Bukenya and Jimdeen Ankunda.

While delivering his keynote address, our CEO, Ronald Musoke expressed appreciation to the ITC leadership, Board, sponsors, and participants for their contributions towards making the conference possible. He emphasized the importance of collective industry preparedness in an increasingly complex and interconnected risk environment.

Addressing the conference theme, Mr. Musoke highlighted emerging challenges, including climate change, geopolitical uncertainty, and the accelerating pace of digital transformation. He underscored the need for innovation, investment in technology, and proactive risk management to strengthen the industry’s capacity to anticipate and respond to evolving threats.

He noted that Uganda’s insurance sector generated approximately UGX 1.79 trillion in premiums in 2024, while insurance penetration remained below 1%. This gap presents significant opportunities for the industry to expand insurance access among households, farmers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and other underserved segments of the economy.

He further emphasized the importance of collaboration among insurers, reinsurers, regulators, and other stakeholders in building a more inclusive and resilient insurance market. Effective underwriting, responsive claims management, and adequate reinsurance capacity, he noted, remain essential in managing large-scale risks, protecting businesses, and supporting sustainable economic growth.

The conference continued with thought-provoking discussions on the strategic priorities shaping the industry’s future. Day three featured conversations on holistic employee wellness, regulatory developments, transformational leadership, strengthening industry capacity, and leveraging Enterprise Risk Management to achieve long-term financial sustainability.

These discussions reinforced the need for insurance organisations to embrace adaptability, accountability, transparency, and forward-thinking solutions. From prioritising employee well-being to strengthening institutional capacity and navigating regulatory changes, participants explored approaches that can improve organisational performance and prepare the industry for emerging opportunities and risks.

For Uganda Re, these engagements underscored the value of continuous learning, innovation, and strategic collaboration in building resilience across the insurance and reinsurance value chain.

Beyond the technical sessions, the conference provided valuable opportunities for participants to strengthen professional relationships and explore potential partnerships. A walk across Gulu City and an evening dinner sponsored by Sanlam-Allianz offered further opportunities for networking and industry engagement.

The three-day gathering concluded with a vibrant cultural dinner sponsored by Prudential Uganda, celebrating the shared spirit, unity, and camaraderie that bring insurance practitioners together beyond their professional responsibilities.

Uganda Re extends its appreciation to the Insurance Training College for organising a memorable and impactful conference, as well as to the sponsors, speakers, and participants whose contributions enriched the discussions.
